About Fettner Construction

Fettner Construction and Development is a family owned and operated home building company that has been building homes on Chicago’s North Shore for over forty years.  At Fettner Construction, we build custom homes, speculative homes, and upscale additions and renovations.  Our projects range from greystones on the gold coast, to multi unit renovations on Michigan Avenue, to 15,000 square foot smart houses in Lake Forest.

Custom Homes

Fettner Construction and Development builds approximately seven to eight custom homes per year.  A custom home is a home that is built for a client, based on their specifications.  When Fettner Construction builds a custom home, the client is as involved as they want to be.

From selecting the home site, to choosing the final finishes, a custom home is the culmination of Fettner’s home building expertise and the client’s personal preferences.  At Fettner Construction we take pride in combining our forty years of home building experience with a client’s creative selections to build the finest home possible.

Addition/Renovation

Fettner Construction and Development renovates numerous projects every year, specializing in homes which have historical landmark significance.  Our renovations include master suites, kitchens, master bathrooms, great rooms and entire rehabilitations.  We have taken barren basements and turned them into multi-use facilities, fully equipped with exercise room, wine cellar, and movie theater.  We have turned eighty year old bedrooms into master suites with sitting rooms, custom closets and the ability to harness the latest technology.  In Fall, 2006, Fettner completed the process of transforming an 80 year old historically significant Church in east Highland Park to a single family home.

A Fettner Construction addition forms that subtle illusion to the onlooker that the exterior has been part of the structure since conception, yet once inside, the interior is lined with marble, granite and natural woods, and is set up for the latest that technology has to offer.  Our projects have ranged from an addition to a one hundred year old home in Highland Park, to apartment renovations of forty separate units in a gold coast high rise.  Whether we renovate that one hundred year old home, or rehab those forty units, Fettner Construction always takes the same care and attention as if we were building our own dream house.

Historic

Fettner Construction has been involved in many historic renovations and remodels along the North Shore, receiving certificates from both the Highland Park Historical Preservation Commission as well as the Illinois Historic Preservation Committee. Whether it’s renovating a historic Church or a 130 year old Farmhouse, Fettner works to ensure that the finished product not only satisfies the historic requirements but also the current state of the art needs of the customer.

Who We Are

Norman Fettner Founder 1922 – 2002

Norman Fettner escaped the persecution of the Nazi regime in Poland to eventually settle in Chicago, Illinois and learn the craft of home building from the ground up.  Barely able to speak a word of English, Norman found work as a carpenter on one of the many construction jobs on Chicago’s north side. Shortly thereafter he began to understand the procedure, and more importantly, the design and structure of building a home.  After a few years of perfecting his trade, Norman assembled his own crew and thus, started what would eventually become Fettner Construction Company.

Mark Fettner President 1949 –

In 1977, Mark began work with Fettner Construction as an estimator.  After a few years as a project estimator, Mark decided to learn the business from the inside out.  As Fettner Construction’s newest project manager, Mark quickly understood the construction process and thus enabled Fettner Construction to build more projects than any previous year.  By 1980, Mark had combined his experience as a project estimator with his construction knowledge and along with Norman, took a small construction company in Chicago and expanded it northward into the high end home market of the north shore.  Mark quickly began developing projects along Evanston’s lakefront, and on prestigious Sheridan Road.  Presently, Mark still oversees all of his current projects with a hands on approach that he learned while managing his projects in the early eighties.  Whether it means staying after dark with a flashlight to inspect the days progress, or personally joining a client at a meeting with a granite distributor, Mark makes sure that every aspect of the project meets his personal approval. Mark currently lives in Highland Park with his wife Marilyn.

David Fettner Executive Vice President 1977 –

David grew up in Highland Park, Illinois where he was immersed in the North Shore building industry and watched the residential home growth explosion of the past two decades.  After graduating from the University of Iowa in 1999, David attended and received his law degree from The John Marshall  Law School where he concentrated in construction law, learning not only the financial and legal aspects of residential construction, but was also trained in more practical areas of construction, such as various zoning issues.  David passed the Illinois bar and was admitted to practice law in state of Illinois in 2002.  He currently lives in Highland Park with his wife Ryin and two children.  David is a commissioner on the Highland Park Zoning Board of Appeals, serving his second term expiring in 2020.

Brian Fettner Vice President 1980 –

Brian was raised in Highland Park with his brother David where he was exposed to the high end custom home boon on Chicago’s Northshore. Brian received his undergraduate degree from DePaul University. In 2007, Brian went on to earn his Masters in Business Administration from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. After returning to Chicago, Brian co-founded and grew a commercial janitorial and maintenance company for over a decade until he decided to transition into his family business. Brian lives in Buffalo Grove with his wife Michelle and two children.
